I have seen bigger turn outs for Rustic, but the crowd was good sized considering it was a Monday night and the show was in Nebraska. There were several audience members who were familiar with the band's music.
One girl, originally from Portland, now residing in Arkansas, made a 7 hour trip to see the band! There were also 5 students (3 of which were college DJs) who drove 45 minutes from Dunn(?) College in Nebraska to see the show. They said that Rustic was getting a lot of play on their station and were very excited to see the band live. They were disappointed because they realized they forgot to bring their CDs to get them signed, but I luckily had 3 new copies of Viva Nueva on me and gave the CDs to them to share.
Jason, the forever gracious, was more than happy to talk to the students before the show and sign their CDs. I think the students left with several of the band members' signatures and were very excited. It was great to see their enthusiasm and love of the band. The show was great.
The band played a fantastic set. There were several older songs - a few I had never heard/seen live since they mainly are an opening act in the southern US where I live. I was very excited to see the band play My Dirt. Dave said they were playing it at the request of Liz from Tommyboy records. Liz is accompanying the band on their current leg of the tour selling merch and pitching it other various ways.
After the show, the girl from Portland who drove 7 hours from Arkansas to see the show turned Liz's I love NY shirt into a "I love NY and Maine" shirt with a Sharpie.
Before Combustible Dave announced that Combustible would be the next single so we should all call the Nebraska radio stations and request the song. Dave jumped off the stage and sang on the floor with the audience during the song. The kids up front sang the words back to Dave (including all of the Dunn College students).
After the band finished their set with C'mon we were sad to see them go. The crowd winded down a bit because it was getting late on a Monday night and there was class and a technology career fair on campus the next day. The audience refused to settle for that being the end of the set and began chanting "would ya?!" "would ya?!" To our delight, the band returned to the stage and played 2 more songs. Feast or Famine I thought was the highlight of the entire set. During the end of the song, the band droped off one by one...first Ryan & Jason followed shortly by Spencer. Jon & Tony continued to play while Dave sang on. Next Tony left the stage, but Jon and Dave kept going.
Spencer rode through the crowd on a skateboard. (Throughout the evening Madio and Begley were using the skateboards as transport to and from the stage & soundboard).
Dave did a phenomenal freestyle ending to Feast making up lyrics as he went along with just Jon accompanying him. Sadly, the show came to a close...several new "Cornhuskers" won over. Thanks to Begley who always hooks me up with the setlist.
